How much is a decent classical guitar worth?

I’m planning to learn jazz and bossa nova as a hobby. I was thinking US$600 would be enough to get a decent classical guitar. But this guy told me that with that budget I can only buy a crappy guitar. Is US$600 too meager of a budget to buy any classical guitar to play jazz?
If that’s true maybe I should just buy the usual accoustic because it’s cheaper…

If you’re going to do gigs, $600 may be a little cheap, for a decent guitar, it’s going to cost you $1,000-$1,500 dollars but worth every penny.
