Flamenco guitars are smaller in size and have less sustain than Classical guitars. Classical guitars have a nice full sound where the Flamenco guitars have a 'sharper' sound. If you are thinking of playing classical pieces, I wouldn't recommend buying a Flamenco guitar. Flamenco guitars are designed for the loud style of Flamenco and aren't as versatile as Classical guitars.
Hope that helps!

IF you wanted to learn folk or rock or blues guitar, I would say "maybe". The physical technique of how to play in those styles is a lot more informal -- "whatever works for you" that lets you play what you want without hurting yourself.

But for classical guitar, correct technique is EVERYTHING to learning the instrument -- and I'm convinced you can't learn correct posture, hand position, correct finger placement, etc etc -- from a book or video. You MUST have a teacher to coach you, one on one, and guide you from the very beginning.

Quite frankly, I'm not even sure if there are videos or DVD's available that teach classical music on guitar -- I've seen LOTS of guitar tutorials for other styles of music -- folk, bluegrass, rock, blues, jazz, etc -- but never for classical.

Bottom line -- you have to decide which is more important -- teaching yourself to play the guitar, in which case you'll learn either rock or folk or whatever other style of music -- or learning to play classical music on guitar, in which case you WILL need lessons with a teacher.

CLASSICAL guitar is ALL ABOUT TECHNIQUE... and that takes a TEACHER... you can't learn proper TECHNIQUE on your own... There is a lot more to playing guitar then just knowing a few notes and the names of chords...

Generally, people who think they can teach theirself to play guitar for FREE off the Internet... have a FOOL for a student.
